SOUND ADVICE: OVER THE RHINE
If you were at Adrian Belew's recent two-night stint at Boulder's
Fox Theatre, you were more than likely impressed by the opening act,
Over the Rhine. Its melodic, often minor-key songs remind one of REM
or 10,000 Maniacs.
Karin Bergquist's vocals are ethereal and haunting. Yet bass player
Linford Detweiler provides a tough, jazzlike undercurrent to the
songs, while guitarist Ric Hordinski can, when the need arises, play
with a slashlike intensity that recalls the band Husker Du.
Their independent-label debut 'Til We Have Faces, emphasizes the
group's folk-rock origins and is beautiful.
