OVER THE RHINE
LUNA PARK
AUG 30 1994
Over the Rhine have a new album out entitled Eve and were in town to
perform songs from this new release and their other two recordings.
The ambience of Luna Park was perfect for Over the Rhine. The
lighting was dim and exotic and the band added to the overall effect
by placing several lit blue candles on stage. But the show is what
it's all about, and musically Over the Rhine presented the crowd
with their abstract tales of life and the world we live in.
Lead vocalist Karin Bergquist has a sweet sounding voice reminiscent
of Judy Collins and Joni Mitchell. Bergquist also played guitar and
keyboards and always projected the image of friendliness and
sophistication. Ric Hordinski on guitar played well, exhibiting a
good deal of creativity. Linford Detweiler on bass and Brian Kelley
on drums made a brilliant, powerful yet subtle rhythm section.
The band opened with three of their very best: the mysterious Within
Without, the well written two part How Does It Feel To Be On My
Mind, and their introspective single Happy With Myself?. Bergquist
was at her sultriest when performing My Love Is A Fever--yes guys,
she's a babe!
Other ultracool tunes which helped to make the evening memorable
were Like A Radio from their first album, Conjectures Of A Guilty
Bystander, and especially the haunting Jacksie.
It won't be long until this Cincinnati, Ohio based band are known
all over the world. Buy their new IRS album, attend their shows, do
what you must to get Over the Rhine!
