hi kids. the doorman at rosebud graciously let my friend kristina and me into rosebud at 5:45, our designated arrival time. linford was busying himself, making the merchandise table look pretty when we walked up to him. greeted with a hug, i introduced my friend kristina to him, and she gave him a hug as well, which, i think, startled him in a relatively pleasant way (she did the same thing to my father when she met him...it's just who she is, one of the most AMAZING people i know!). we lit the candles and lit some incence, spoke of things, and then the doors were to be opened and linford went upstairs. i hadn't seen karin yet at all. sitting at the merch table, i realized that we had no change in the change box, so i ran upstairs to ask linford about it. he was sitting at a table with karin and jack, and with the opening act, rich and jennie stearnes, and i felt very strange interrupting them. i felt even more strange asking linford for money, but he gave me a $20, which a changed at the bar. matt was the only other discussion listee there, but there were plenty of people from the announcement list. several came up to me and said, "answered the e-mail first, huh?" soon into the night, matt ventured in with several friends, and they came and sat with kristina and me for a while. i conned matt into buying me a piece of cheesecake. *wink* the opening act finally played, and they were ok. their music is nice and simple and folksy, what you would expect from an opening act of over the rhine. the real meat and potatoes came with karin, linford, and jack onstage. karin was wearing a black shirt with red pants, and i really like her hair longer. she looks like a gelfling (from _the dark crystal_) from far away... the set list: go down easy bothered -- yum! always yum! after that, linford mentioned that *bothered* is on two cds, and he talked about the smoking version with upright bass on _eve_ yum! he also referred to _besides_ as a collection of orphan songs that never quite found their home. anything at all jesus in new orleans linford and karin talk about his accordian and how he doesn't know what all of the buttons do yet. they were very playful on stage, really joking with one another. it was nice. during this song, one of the waitresses came up to me with a piece of cheesecake, and told me it was from one of the guys from her table. it was *sooo* good, with raspberry sauce, and two forks! i had just been teasing matt when i told him that i wanted him to buy me cheesecake, but i guess batting my eyes really *does* work. thanks matt! green clouded swallow tail they were talking about how they were looking forward to going into the recording studio again this summer, and that they were testing out new songs before they recorded them to see which ones worked and which ones didn't. when linford asked karin how she knew things worked, she said that the discussion lists lights up. then she said that there were a couple of listees in the crowd, to which matt and i both gave a little yell. it's nice to be appreciated. :) and we definitely like this song a lot! i radio heaven this was the stripped down version they played at canal street in january. it is utterly delightful...i almost can't listen to the _ffr_ version now! karin spoke about the grammys, and how she cried in delight for some parts and cried not so much in delight for other parts. she then said that she wouldn't go into it, because she didn't want to sound bitter. i just wanted to say that we know that over the rhine deserves nominations over a lot of those other bands. :( (hey, dan, speaking of the grammys, how did that grammys poll turn out?) little blue river/in the garden thanks to meghan, i cannot hear this song with thinking about the interpretive dance! all i need is everything before this song, karin told us a story of a turtle she used to have. they named him reverend, and he would sit in his box on the porch, and every morning they would call, "good morning, reverend!" to make the neighbors think funny things. :) curse these dreams holy rain you know, jack's voice is growing on me. i didn't think i would ever be able to say that, but it is. i think i might have to buy _cheap tattoo_. and for anyone else interested in buying it, it is only available through jack's website...there is a link on the over the rhine website, if you are interested. :) the world can wait ohio jack's valentine linford made several comments during the improv section at the end of this song. apparently they played some club and one of the kids came up to them and said, "hey, i really liked that comedy number you played!" so, linford kept saying that this was their comedy number. also, during the improv, he asked, "is this where it becomes more fun for us that for the audience?" i think it was awesome. kristina and i agree that karin should come to duquesne and do at least a lecture on vocal improv. miles to go so, they did some mentioning of the tribute album, talking about how a bunch of very talented bands did covers of their songs. they mentioned how humbled they were, and they said that one of the bands did the best performance of *miles* that they had ever heard. after hearing that, they decided to pull it out and brush it up, and now they are performing it again. encore: poughkeepsie like a radio/ain't no sunshine one thing that really surprised me was that they did not play either *norwood boy* or *hush now*, the two new songs they have. maybe they are working on polishing them up a bit before bringing them up in the world, but i was looking forward to hearing them again. as long as they don't cut *green clouded swallow tail*. that one is definitely my favorite. :) this was a delightful show, and i finally got my copy of _grey ghost stories_. although it didn't have the excitement of the canal street show (only one other fun listee to hang out with instead of 6, no double sets, no phone number that turns out to be the best thing to happen to you in almost a year), it had a nice quiet mellow feel to it. the best thing was that i was home in half an hour, and that was with stopping at kristina's house to drop her off at home. :) no speeding tickets this time! well, if you read this far, thanks. :) happy sunday, all.
