LOCATION: Jammin' Java, Vienna, VA
LINEUP: Karin, Linford, Kim Taylor
REVIEW BY: Kirk
Same set list as the night before at Ram's Head, except that we got a second encore: "My Love Is a Fever". Also, the other songs in Kim's opening set were "Hit Me" and "Troubled".
I'll second Ana Maria's description, and add a few thoughts of my own:
Kim sounds absolutely wonderful backing up Karin, pretty much how Karin sounds backing up herself. They could have had her mixed higher, though. Linford also sang some BGVs, especially on "Bluer" and "Anything at All"- very nice.
"Faithfully Dangerous" is different, a sort of piano-loungey thing with changing tempos. "Rhapsodie" included the intro.
I had not been looking forward to hearing "Ohio". It seems like it's on every setlist and every recording in recent history, with only slight variation. I mean, I know "Ohio" like the back of my hand, or something. tongue.gif But, I loved it. Somehow, its very familiarity, and Karin's mastery of it, made it feel like a favorite story, and old friend. And, it is a very good song.
Probably the thing I appreciated most about this show was watching the two of them on stage. They seemed more happy, in tune, friendly than sometimes in the past. Often when Karin wasn't singing she'd stand facing Linford as he played, swaying like she enjoyed it. And their banter was still sometimes teasing, but always gentle. Especially with the intimacy of the new songs, I got the feeling that the time they took off from touring OHIO is paying off for everybody.
All in all, highly recommended, 4.5 stars.
