Almost a year to the day from their last show in Orlando, the gang came to town for a small show at a MUCH IMPROVED Plaza. The staff has really made some major improvements, at least for the audience. I can't speak for the band.
Other than the little shows they did in Texas, this was the first show of 2010 and it was a good one. I was 3rd row middle (it was a fully seated show this year) and the gang seemed to be in great spirits. Karin was almost bouncing around for most of the show. She had a couple technical difficulties lyric-wise... including a funny HEY I NEED A DO-OVER part on "Only God Can Save Us Now".
They played guinea pig with us on several songs, including 1 that Linford said that Karin had never sung in front of an audience before and 2 others that they said they had only ever played live at those mini Texas gigs. If I would've known this was going to be a concert of firsts, I would've brought pen and paper.
I think some of these songs are songs that are known to you folks in Cincy... those of us far away, they weren't. There were at least the 3 I mentioned that they said were BRAND NEW 2010 songs. I'm not sure which of these was which... I'm bad with names, even song names, if I don't write them down... but here's what I can tell you...
There was:
a sweet love song that Karin wrote
a song inspired by the dogs coming in from the cold that morphed into
her feelings about the economy
a "sassy" and "cruel" love song written by Linford that they both sang
a song they both sang that had a much more country feel to it
It was another short set (yes, we went through this last year... the "new normal"... yeah, yeah, yeah... a year later and I am still going to shows and I'm still not seeing this new normal, but I'll avoid that debate this year) but a very solid one. It's interesting to see them and watch the banter drift to Ohio topics and not get the normal reactions that you see in the shows at home. I got the feeling that the pretty full house weren't long-time fans. There were some odd WOOO moments (like the mention of good dog, bad dog got a weird WOOO that I didn't understand) but it didn't have that "old fan" feel. That's ok, new fans are great, too!
The oldest songs were from GDBD.
TWHF - nothing
Patience - nothing
Eve - nothing
GDBD - "All I Need Is Everything" and "Etc Whatever"
FFR - nothing
Ohio - "Ohio" and "Professional Daydreamer"
DP - "I Want You To Be My Love" and "Drunkards Prayer"
SA - "North Pole Man"
TC - "Trumpet Child" and "I'm On A Roll" and "Trouble"
There were 2 covers. Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" (Buckley style, not Cohen style) and "something we put together last night at the hotel from the classic days of bluegrass"... they didn't say the name and it wasn't a song I was familiar with. It was just something Kenny's dad used to play.
For anyone curious, we had no drummer to replace Mickey, just Jake and
Kenny.
The duo (which is apparently really a trio, but only 2 of the 3 played) Jubal's Kin opened. They were talented kids and did a couple of good cover songs, as well as some originals. http://www.jubals-kin.com/ They played about a half dozen instruments between them. Several guitars, the fiddle, mandolin, etc. Harmonies were good, the playing was sharp... I liked it.
I just clicked on that link myself and we were sitting behind the 3rd
member of the band when we first came in (we came in during the 1st song,
so we sat down in the back row until the first song break). He was easily
the youngest member of the audience... but he turned around a few times
and pointed to a lady holding a video camera and I'm positive that was
the kid.
