Jeff Grantham:
I don't have the set list from Saturday night (Holly,
are you out there?), but I can tell you that it was
another great evening of music with the dynamic duo.
It was probably the most fun I've had at an OtR show.
There were lots of humorous remarks from Karin and
Linford throughout the performance. Linford wore some
cowboy boots that Karin had given him for Christmas,
so she had a few "it must be the boots" comments
during the evening. Then there was the story about
Linford's vintage dresses...
The NEW 21 song double album will be released on
August 19th. It will be 2 CD's and should also be out
on vinyl. There is still no name for the record yet.
Linford threw out a few ideas and asked for audience
feedback. One was "Wine Me, Dine Me, Over the Rhine
Me." Another was simply "Ohio." Karin said that Paul
Mahern, the producer, had suggested something along
the lines of "Sweaty Hickey Party." If you have any
excellent suggestions, you can e-mail them to Linford.
As for new songs, "Only God Can Save Us Now" was a
tongue in cheek account of their recent nursing home
experiences. Linford said they are keeping the new
material somewhat guarded. We will get to hear more
of it when they do the upcoming band tour. They did
not say which musicians will be joining them, but
Karin said afterwards that Jack will not be on this
tour. He remains in Scotland for the time being.
It was my first time at the Canal Street Tavern. When
I walked in the door, the first person I saw was the
diminutive, delightful Kylie Jo Wilkerson. KJ was
working the merchandise table. The opener was Cameron
Martin Cochran, a Cincinnati singer-songwriter
described by Karin as "a tall drink of water." I
liked his music well enough to pick up his 5 song EP,
which was a mere $7. I enjoyed the intimate
atmosphere of the venue and thought the sound was very
good. Mick Montgomery is the man!
I had been trying to line up Joel Henderson as the
opener for one of the Dayton concerts, but had no luck
in reaching Linford. Interestingly enough, while they
were incommunicado, I found out during the show that
they had been only a freaking hour away from me doing
studio work in Bloomington, IN! After they left the
Hoosier state, they went to Florida for a couple of
shows and actually took two days off to hang out on
the beach. As for the aforementioned Joel, check out
http://www.joelhenderson.com/music.html to hear four
songs produced by Ric Hordinski.
I know, it's too much information for some of you and
not enough for others. Sorry I couldn't give you a
detailed set list. I know at least one person out
there who actually has it! You know who you are! : )

Hello everyone. I am new to the list. I've enjoyed
the music of OTR for about 7 years but saw them for
the first time this weekend at Canal Street. It was
such a great experience! Karins voice is beautiful and
listening to her voice on CD does it no justice. I
loved the intimacy of the venue and really enjoyed
hearing Karin and Linfords stories and comments. I
went Friday and had such a great time that I decided
to catch the Saturday show too. I wish I had written
down the set list. I remember Lucy, Bothered, Gillian
Welch's Orphan Girl (excellent!), Summertime, My love
is a fever, When I go, Jesus in New Orleans.

A little more variation in the setlists than we sometimes see at
back-to-back Canal Street shows, but I'd still like to see more variation,
and more really old stuff. Still, both were very good shows. Karin
temporarily got lost in the middle of the new song about redemption on
Saturday night, but it did come back to her.

Only God Can Save Us Now (with the full backstory as intro)
Friday night at Canal Street was a deep breath outside again. As Jeff said
about Saturday, lots of good-humoured talked from K&L. They're obviously
very excited about the new project (Linford: "I think there are 12 songs
that have never seen the light of day.") and, as they put it, a little
punch-drunk from so much time in the studio. Certainly the most
conversational I've seen them to be on-stage.
Fun on stage, fun in the seats. Karin expresses her love for all movies
Christopher Guest (her character in Guffman is Parker Posey, "I wanna make
Cokes"). All his stuff hits a little too close to home, she says. Collected
stories from the road. Extensive props given to Kylie for working merch both
nights.
Other possible album titles: "Only God Can Save Us Now," "Cruel and Pretty,"
"A Little Kick-Ass Beauty Before We Die." Stories of Linford's happy
ownership of dresses and purses. An "unnerving number," according to Karin.
"Purses absolutely rock," says Linford.
Songs I hadn't heard:
Jesus & Mary. This one hits hard. Lots of strange thoughts for me coming
"home" to loud, empty smiles and towns. Strange new regrets for old
mistakes. The word "ocean" means more than it did do.
Fever. Linford just grooves on the guitar with this one. Such a simple
arrangement, great setting for Karin's voice. His lock on rhythm is still
good across instruments. Unfair.
Changes Come. I was sold when Linford came in on keys. One of those songs
that's just gonna make you sit down and look at doors like you're sad. Been
singing the snatches I can remember all week.
Only God Can Save Us Now. Karin's story about this song lasts for several
minutes. Would be a humorous song if heard cold, but the story adds so much
dimension and humanness. Maybe can get a transcript up.
A friend of mine did tape the show. It'll take him a bit to slice it into
tracks and such. May host the show online as MP3s, I may start a tree to
spread the love. When it's ready, I'll post. Glad to share, but there's no
reason to push. Pole pole (pronounced po-lay po-lay), means slowly slowly.
Blame the wait on culture shock. Which is no small thing, by the way.
Great show, thanks everyone. Special thanks to Jesse Callahan for waiting so
patiently in line, Kylie for working merch (of course), and Karin for the
Guffman reference. "Gather 'round, for I have news." Actually, nope, that's
it.
