Christian D Lindemer:
Well, the first of two OtR performances at Cornerstone 2002 has come
to a close, and let me tell you, it was (Kevin Spacey in American
Beauty impression) spec-TACULAR. The band was originally scheduled
for an hour and a half, but took a full two hours to share their
music. The setlist:
All I Need is Everything
If Nothing Else
I Radio Heaven
Moth
When I Go
Anything At All (A new song, Karin said it may end up on the new
album)
Cast Me Away
Little Blue River (The band went on for a looong groove at the end of
this song. 'twas nice)
Faithfully Dangerous
Anyway
Holy Rain (One of Jack's songs on his new album. The whole band
accompanied him, including Karin doing some backing vocals)
The World Can Wait (K & L)
Ohio (K only on keys)
Fever (Peggy Lee cover. Not to be confused with "My Love Is a Fever"
=) The song will apparently be featured on a compilation due out this
fall.)
Jack's Valentine (One of my favorites for the evening)
Miles
Latter Days
- -- At this point, the band left the stage. One of the 'fest staff
came up to the mic and said "Now, this just woundn't be an Over the
Rhine concert without at elast one encore!" at which point the band
returned to the stage --
Give Me Strength
Goodbye
The band did not return for a second encore, though the songs "Lucy,"
"Orphan Girl" and "Rhapsodie" were listed on the band's set list.
It's still very undewrstandable, as the band had been playing for the
past two hours straight. As I said before, tonight was an excellent
set. It's probably the best OtR show I've seen. Maybe the Atlanta
show was better, but I won't know until I get it (wink, wink) now
will I?
It is now time for me to go to sleep, for I have mush 'fest-going to
do tomorrow. There's another OtR concert, after all.
Jeff Holland:
The merch booth had Linford's new book as well as a book of
David Nixon's poetry. They also had a very cool set of postcards with
each card describing each of OtR's albums. There was also a
"Post Cornerstone 2002" card which laid out the short term future of
the band (Jack going to Scotland, touring in Europe, Southeast US
in fall, December tour, etc.) but didn't say much that we don't already
know.
Here's the set list from the 7/5/02 show:
   All I Need
   If Nothing Else
   I Radio Heaven
   Moth
   When I Go
   Anything At All
   Little Blue River
   Faithfully Dangerous
   Anyway
   Holy Rain
   World Can Wait
   Ohio
   Jack's Valentine
   Miles
   Latter Days
   ---
   Orphan Girl
   Goodbye
   Some notes:
If you've seen the band, you know how Linford will stack his
organ keyboard on top of his electric keyboard. During the
soundcheck, we heard a loud *boom* and there it was, the organ keyboard
had slipped off and fallen and there was a deathly silence on stage.
The organ had to be removed and a replacement was brought out on stage.
It must have belonged to some other band or to Cornerstone. It looked
very nice and had a fat "major-league baseball park" sound to it.
I asked Linford the next day if his keyboard was going to be okay and
he winced and said, "It's going to need some work."
Cornerstone delayed setting off fireworks until Friday, so they
started going off just as OtR's set began. I bet you never thought
the band would take the stage to exploding fireworks, did you?
Jack had some really long, nice guitar solos, longer than normal
on a lot of songs. Versions of Jack's Valentine and Little Blue River
were even longer than normal. He had the entire half of stage left
all to himself. The stage looked kind of funny with four people
all crowded over on one side of the stage and Jack looking all
lonely on the other side. Karin joked that was in Jack's contract
with the band. Jack only brought his slide guitar and Fender guitar.
One would suppose the rest are on the way to Scotland.
Somewhat disapointing that the band didn't do a new songs at
Cornerstone, especially with them working on songs in the studio, but
I would suppose they haven't had a whole lot of time to do rehearsals.
Kylie Wilkerson:
Well, Joe(the boyfriend) and I arrived at Cstone on Friday evening. We got
some grub, walked around, and then watched the end of the 77's concert so we
could get a good seat for OtR. We quickly met some listies(which I was dying
to do). I met Bob the Dancing Monkey, Zayne, Twila, Kristin, and her
hubby(?),new listie Angie, and her lurking boyfriend John. So we sat with
all of them. (after the concert I met So Briquet and Smitty the Saint)
Anyhoo, the concert was freaking amazing. They kicked it so heavy. Ya'll
already got the setlist so I won't go into that. But I will say that Karin
had on a sweet outfit. Most kickin belt I've ever seen. I kept wondering if
she got any of it on sale. :)
Anyhoo, I'm struggling b/c I want to tell all of you everything that
happened after the concert but I feel like I should just keep it to myself.
It was nothing short of just like almost the coolest thing that has ever
happened to me. :) I just love those people called Over the Rhine.
