REVIEW BY: Various Listees

David Armstrong
I got Karin's set list after the show & helped tear down the stage.
In order, what they played was:

1. When I Go (just Karin & Linford)
2. Go Down Easy
3. Goodbye (nailed it!)
4. Anyway
5. Cast Me Away (the most beautiful 45 second song in the world)
6. Little Blue River/In The Garden (rather appropriate for the venue)
7. Poughkeepsie
8. Faithfully Dangerous (a personal favourite)
9. Show Me
10. Green-Clouded Swallowtail
11. Fairpoint Diary (just K & L. L prefaced the song by saying he struggles with putting too much information in any one song. K - God bless her - sang two
lines & forgot the words. L kept strumming his guitar while she "pictured the words in her mind". Two measures later she was back on track & blessed us with
an ADORABLE piano solo in the middle of the song on a TOY PIANO, elevated on a stand. She still had to bend over slightly to play it.)
12. Rhapsodie (just K & L)
13. Bothered (K, L & Jack)
14. Jacksie
15. Lucy
16. Fever
17. Circle Of Quiet
18. Latter Days

ENCORE:

19. All I Need Is Everything
20. Orphan Girl
21. Broken (the Cowboy Junkie's tune that K said they - Junkies - never play live. Only K, L & Jack played this.)

Their set-list indicated that they had planned to do a second encore that would've included, "Jack's Valentine" & "Last Night", but I believe everyone was so
damn cold, they let it go after "Latter Days".
There was some banter between K & L about "keeping things moving between songs."
Was it so the audience wouldn't get bored or because of the frigid temps? K had said every other time they play here - Coney Island - it's 110 degrees!

SIDEBAR / PERSONAL NOTES:
I enjoyed 'Brownhouse'. 2 sisters & a guy. (OtR & 6P influence) Karin introduced them as her friends & said they are "on their way" & "talented beyond their
years".
(Linford said he likes their name.)
I was not impressed with 'Ticklepenny Corner'. Linford introduced them. They sound better when the girls are singing. Lose the guy's vocals!
(Karin likes to say their name.)
Onto 'Over The Rhine' -
Everyone in the band wore coats.
Linford WAS chatty, with newly shorn hair. (Thanx for the t-shirt for helping you tear down)
Karin IS beautiful! Regardless of what she wears or colour of her hair. Her voice & presence are a spiritual experience. (Thanx for your personable advice Karin)
Jack is an AMAZING guitarist. Truly a great addition to this ever-evolving ensemble. Congrats on you & Hazel's first child due this winter. (It took you 14 years?)
Speaking of Hazel, she is a CHARM! Sweet, likable & endearing. I found another British connection! (When cloning becomes legal, can I put in a request?)
Don was there. Solid drummer, nothing extraordinary.
Dave is a superb bassist. I got a chuckle that he needed to use charts for several songs.

I didn't get there until early in Brown House's set. Hey, Chris! Good job!
(Anytime a fellow listee and ex-roommate opening for OtR is always
monumentous occasion). I couldn't attend Lebo's, we went to Friday Night
Philanthropists instead (all of you Cincinnati listees, email me if you're
interested in meeting folks and going to a different bar once each month and
giving a small bit to charity). I shoulda had them try to move the FNP
philanthropist thing to Lebo's! Darn...

Yeah, it was a good show. I think people were exceptionally chatty during
the Ticklepenny Corner portion of the show; after Brown House everyone kinda
got up and wandered around and met people, and by the time they started
playing, no one was in the mood to sit again.

Someone from this list (you know who you are!) "borrowed" my setlist at the
end of the show and I've not seen it back yet (ahem!) so here is what I
remember, and not in setlist order:

Cast Me Away
Jacksie
Circle of Quiet
Rhapsodie
Bothered
Little Blue River
Latter Days
All I Need is Everything
Faithfully Dangerous
Go Down Easy (the second song of the night)
Lucy
Goodbye
Anyway
When I Go (the show opener, with just Karin and Linford on stage)
Green Clouded Swallowtail
Fairpoint Diary (I like this song more and more each time, with the toy
piano)
Show Me (the Come On Song)
Orphan Girl
Now I Know (that Cowboy Junkies song they've been playing lately, played as
the closer of first encore, a dumb choice)

The setlist had a second encore listed, of Last Night and another peppy one
(I think Jack's Valentine?) but people were ready to scram in the cold, and
their minds were logjammed by the low tempo lullabys that OtR had just
thrown them in the first encore.

When I Go (the opening song) has really nice organ bits, the same kind of
old-school organ parts that are heard on "It's Never Quite What it Seems",
the GDBD album re-release version. "Faithfully Dangerous" was presented in
it's alterna-weird variety, the same as the Christmas show (and a similar
keyboard patch heard on the OtR MP3 of-the-month "If Nothing Else")

Megan thought that Karin looked like Faith Hill. I agree. Someone needs
her to go somewhere other than Norwood for hair stylings... Heheh. Megan
also would be qualified to sing backup at any OtR gathering, I can safely
attest to that now.

We stuck around a good 20 minutes after the show, and only Jack seemed to
make an appearance, but was at the soundboard and not really talking to
anyone else. His wife womanned the merch table, and Todd Kearby manned the
Ticklepenny Corner one.

My impressions (quickly 'cause I need to go to work...)

Brownhouse -- yes, more than a little bit of OtR influence here. A few
really nice songs, though!

Ticklepenny Corner: Liked 'em a lot! If you hear they're playing
somewhere, I'd recommend 'em. On a sidenote, I picked up their cd and
it's very good! -- produced by "our very own" Ric Hordinski, even
distributed in the brown cardboard, hand-stamped packaging (is that a Ric
trademark, or is it a common low-budget thing to do?)

OtR -- Got to hear the new stuff that I keep hearing about. Little Blue
River was a highlight ("In the Garden" is a fav. hymn of the friend
sitting next to me, so she was quite thrilled to hear that). Ummm, what
was up with Karin's "material girl" look? I dunno, Andy, I didn't quite
go for the pigtails, huge hoop earrings and eye makeup.... Not an 80's
boy, I guess. Linford was in an especially chatty mood, I think, between
songs. Couldn't get the guy to shut up and play! ; ) Actually, that's
totally cool with me -- love to hear him talk! Jack: great playing --
anybody remember which song it was he was really starting to jam on and
wanted Don to keep playing, but Don mis-interpreted (I think) and thought
he was wanting to stop the song, so it was cut off a little early?
(weirdly phrased question, sorry!) I asked Hazel about the progress on
Jack's new album and I believe she said he would be starting to mix it
either this week or next and hopes to release it around the same time as
OtR's next one (is that code for NEVER!??!?)

And it was friggin' COLD! Can I get an AMEN!? Man, I came unprepared
for autumn to be in attendance. Was really clear and nice, though. The
sky was pristine, the moon was "pregnant" (as Linford noted), ...very
nice! : ) And speaking of pregnant, when Karin first walked out she had
her big acoustic around her neck and with the long coat she was wearing I
couldn't tell that her hips were turned slightly beneath and that her
guitar was resting on her hip -- sure looked like the guitar was leaning
up against a round tummy! But, I was wrong, so don't get excited -- I
just thought I'd share......

Ok, nothing much to say about Don and Dave. I like 'em ok. Hard to get
used to all that hair back there, though.... Anybody else think Dave L
looked like a post-'Nam Lieutenent Dan? (but with legs, of course)...

Arright. gotta go. thanks for listenin'. back to the shadows,

Jon

Wow, its surprising that no one has really posted much since Friday night. Its even strange that myself(a die hard lurker) is the first person to post any type of
review. Of course I have to post since Bruce told me he wouldn't do anything until I did. Well, here is my attempt at a review.

I got to Coney Island about 8:10 because of work and other obligations, so I couldn't make it to Lebo's beforehand. The two bands opening for OTR were very
good in my opinion. Brownhouse was OTR like in its music, but different enough to have their own style. I thought that they said they wrote most of the
material a few weeks before, but I might be mistaken. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see them more since they are from Cincinnati. Ticklepenny Corner was
also very good and different. They seemed a little more countryish and had some songs that I really liked. I arrived 2 songs into Brownhouse's set, so I just
grabbed a chair and sat near the back on the left side. I didn't spend much time looking for anyone, since I knew I'd have time to do so later. After Ticklepenny
played, and after I got some coffee(since it was a lot colder than I thought it would be, probably along with most everyone there), I talked with some
listees(Drew, Bruce, Dan, Jay and Lynzi) and then took my seat again for OTR.

I thought that OTR played a very good set. Karin had blond hair in 2 pigtails, so she looked like she was a teenager. I wonder what her natural hair color is,
since it seems to change everytime I see OTR play. The band played well, and provided a good mix of songs. I'll let someone else post a set list, but some
that I remember are "Go Down Easy", "Lucy", "Bothered", "Latter Days" and "My Love is a Fever". I was glad to hear some older songs that I hadn't heard in
while(but they might have been playing them in other shows I didn't go to). I don't think there is much else to tell about the show from my point of view. I let
others fill in more details.

After the show, a bunch of us met up at Bruce's favorite place, Kaldi's where we hung out for a few hours talking. I had a really great time seeing old friends
again and meeting new people. To those of you that I met for the first time(Alfred, and the 2 people from Brownhouse whose names I forget, sorry) it was great
to meet you and for those who I didn't meet, maybe we'll see each other again.
